Start Sheet for Lymm
The aim of our Golfing Society is to facilitate the enjoyment of mildly competitive golf on a number of different local courses in good company. The Society was formed in 1937, and the first competitive season was 1938 when just two competitions were held. The Society reformed after the war in 1946, and as membership grew, the number of competitions increased to the present six meetings each season during the summer months.
Anyone who works or has worked for The University of Manchester or the Manchester Metropolitan University is eligible to become a member. Postgraduate students are most welcome to play in any of our meetings on a guest basis. Members are free to invite anyone to play as a guest at our meetings.
To contact the secretary, Mike Fergie. please email umsgsoc@gmail.com
You are welcome to play at any of our meetings for one season without payment of a subscription. Our annual membership subscription is currently £20, which helps with prizes and trophy costs, and enables us to subsidise some of the more expensive green fees for members. Our overheads account for less than 1% of our subscription income.
The Committee currently comprises:
Treasurer: Barry Plumb (formerly MMU)
Secretary: Mike Fergie (formerly UoM)
Handicap Administrator: Steve Brookes (formerly MMU)
We aim to hold up to six "Stableford" competitions during the season. We are fortunate to have silver trophies to play for in three of them. Two of the Society trophies - the Clare Lees and Needham Cups - were presented by our first two Presidents and the Tom Ashley Cup was provided by the membership.
The first of our meetings is held in April and our last is in October. We hold our meetings on midweek afternoons and mainly at courses around Manchester to ease travelling. We have a modest two-course dinner after the golf, and although attendance at this is encouraged, it is certainly not obligatory.
Members are free to invite anyone to play as a guest at any meeting. Guests are presented with a prize at the evening dinner if they have a winning score, but are not eligible to win a Society Trophy or a Society Officer's Prize.
Members and guests play off Society handicaps. For Members who do not belong to a golf club, they are set by the Society by negotiation and/or using scorecards completed for handicap purposes. If you have an existing handicap this will be adjusted over the season based on performance in Society events. Scores can be submitted to Golf England to enable you to obtain a CDH number and recognised golf handicap.
There is also a Members' Singles Matchplay Knockout Competition, played for the Jackson Rosen Cup, which was presented by two of our members. All these matches are played on members' own choice of courses, to suit those involved, apart from the final, which is played on a neutral course.
We have a reciprocal arrangement with Salford University Golf Society, whereby we can play at their meetings on a guest basis. This offers our members the opportunity to play on several other different courses during the season. One of our fixtures is a joint match fixture with Salford where we play for the coveted David Howling Trophy.
